Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can dogs lead a plant-based (vegan) lifestyle?

Dogs indeed belong to the order Carnivora, but they are actually omnivores. The canine body can transform certain amino acids, the building blocks of protein, into others, meaning that dogs can get all the amino acids they need while avoiding meat. A study based on genomics, published in Nature magazine, proves that dogs have evolved to digest carbohydrates and starch. Based on our experience, we find that dogs are healthier and more energetic on vegan diets and also experience less bad breath and body odor. Bramble, a vegan border collie, lived a healthy life up to the age of 27!

Do the Doshas change with time?

Yes, the dosha can change over time and/or with season. We recommend that you take the quiz every 3-4 months to identify the primary dosha. I was told that dogs cannot digest carbohydrates. Is this true?

To meet their energy needs, dogs have evolved to use proteins and fats as their primary energy sources, but they can also use carbohydrates for energy. The fact that the dog's digestive system produces enzymes that are specific for digesting starches and sugars shows that they are capable of digesting carbohydrates. However, complex carbohydrates such as grains are more digestible when they are cooked.
